Initial Thoughts on Acai Berry

Acai Berry has become extremely popular on the health and wellness market in the last few years. The berry falls under the “superfood” category because of its high nutritional content. It seems that scads and scads of companies want to include such a nutritious food in their products. And the consuming public is only too willing to accept these products. Convinced that Acai Berry will help with all manners of difficulty, we routinely accept products and their claims simply because they contain these magical little berries.

Case in point: Acai cleansing products. There’s a rash of products out on the market right now that claim to deliver Acai’s unique ability to flush the body of unwanted toxins and weight. While it’s no doubt a positive thing to flush the body of these, there seems to be little evidence that Acai Berries can do the job. And this is just one example of the market responding to the popularity of Acai in a strange manner. I’d add that it’s rather deceptive as well. So when I think of Acai Berries and the products that contain them, I try to choose those that promote nutrition and healthy living. If they help me with my weight loss goals, then so be it, but I’m not holding my breath.

Acai Berries and What They Can Do

As I’ve already noted, Acai Berries are usually prized for their nutritional value. They’re an excellent addition to the day-to-day diet of the average consumer. So let’s look at this content to see if we can figure out why these little berries are so popular. Acai can only retain its nutritional content when it is freeze-dried quickly after harvesting. Otherwise, it breaks down rather rapidly. Analysis of freeze-dried samples suggests that Acai Berries are a significant source of good fats, a decent amount of protein, and lots of fiber (44 grams!). The berries also contain vitamins and minerals, but the amounts are rather middling as fruits and superfoods go. Manufacturers highlight the antioxidants in Acai Berries. The berries do in fact deliver a decent amount of antioxidants, but it’s not as if they’re the best or only source of antioxidants. In other words, Acai Berries are in an average position among superfoods. Acknowledging this might counteract the excessive attention paid to the berries lately. The attention might be the cause for these peddlers who take it upon themselves to promise unreasonable effects from Acai Berry consumption.

Drawbacks to Acai Berries

If understood properly, there really aren’t any drawbacks to eating Acai Berries. That would be like saying there’s a drawback to eating apples or whatever. I guess too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. However, with the increased hype of the Acai market, consumers will want to beware of excessive claims and deceptive advertising schemes. This would be the main drawback to Acai Berries right now: they can’t possibly bear up under the pressure to deliver all the benefits they’re supposed to.

Would I Eat Acai Berries?

I would and I do. Acai Berries can be a great addition to a weight loss lifestyle. Along with regular exercise and a healthy, weight loss supplement, Acai Berries can play an important role in a healthy, holistic diet. I’d be careful about Acai supplements, however. Stick with the actual berries or their juice.
